This region includes these properties: Walker, Fitch-Woods, McLain’s Woods, Perry Land, Watson Way, Williams Barn-Sorhaug, Sawtell, Hawtree, Floyd, Torrey Woods, Groton Hills, Baddacook, Nipmuc Meadows, Priest Family Conservation Area, GDRSD, Wattles Pond, Northwoods, Marsh-Lewis Memorial Grove and Still Meadow.

Long Hike Idea: McLain’s Woods/Fitch-Woods/Perry Land/Walker Conservation Area//Watson Way Conservation Area are contiguous parcels north of Williams Barn/Sorhaug Woods and make for a good long hike or run. They connect across Chicopee Row via Mahoney Ln on the west and Brown Trail on the east.  The parcels comprise several miles of trails.  Terrain is generally rolling and dry and has a few bridges and bog bridges.  The Perry Land includes a large hill and an interesting monolith.  There are numerous vernal pools and a large beaver pond.

McLain’s Woods/Fitch-Woods parcels are a very nice hiking area with several miles of trails.

Hawtree Conservation Area

A neighborhood-access conservation parcel offering short trails through shaded woods and a beautiful observation deck overlooking Unkety Brook marsh. An out-and-back trail makes no connections to other trails.

One-half-mile trail connecting Sawtell Conservation Area with GCT’s Baddacook Conservation Area parcel and the NE Power Co. powerlines.

Nipmuc Meadows

Formerly known as the Shattuck Homestead, this parcel has been dedicated and renamed “Nipmuc Meadows” in honor of the Nipmuc people who were the earliest settlers in Groton. Level trails cross a meadow over to woods where you will find the shore of Baddacook Pond, which teems with wildlife and is an important turtle habitat.

Williams Barn-Sorhaug Woods

The Bruce Clements Trail starts at the Williams Barn and ends with a loop trail adjacent to Brooks Orchard.  On this loop, one passes by many large white pines that were pushed over by a microburst (wind shear) in May 2020.
