Bertozzi Conservation Area

This forested area provides for excellent fishing, hunting, river views, and recreation.  Surrounding it to the west, north, and south is the very large Squannacook River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) that is owned by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.  

The Bertozzi trails are marked but the trails within the Squannacook River WMA are not. Footpaths go to and along the river. The forest is a mix of maple and white pine, with shrubby undergrowth that attracts songbirds and small mammals. In fall, it is a popular destination for deer hunting, fishing, and swimming.

History

The Bertozzi Conservation Area was donated by the Groton Leatherboard Company in 1963 to the newly formed Groton Conservation Commission and became its first holding. It extends into Shirley on the west side of the Squannacook River. The land was the site of the historic “Thompsonville” settlement and sawmill in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of the waterways constructed for the sawmill are still intact.

Throne Hill

Throne Hill, accessible from trailheads on Castle Drive and Rockwood Lane, has over five miles of rolling forested trails, passing several vernal pools and wetlands. At certain times of the year you will want to wear waterproof footwear. In winter you will likely see the tracks of many varieties of wildlife.

Bertozzi trails are generally dry. But there is no signage, bridges, or amenities on the Squannacook River WMA trails. The riverbank may be steep or muddy and trails are often under water. Entire area is open to hunting in all seasons – blaze orange strongly recommended October through December.
